Action Philosophers: Giant-Sized Thing Vol 1

Page history last edited by hartman3@... 4 mos ago

Action Philosophers: Giant-Sized Thing Vol. 1, by Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey (ill.). Evil Twin Comics, 2007.
Also Action Philosophers: Giant-Sized Thing Vol. 2, 2006.

Summary: Major world philosophers' life and works are explained in an irreverent, action-adventure style.

Analysis: Ok, this is much better than Philosophy for Beginners. Accurate, funny, and picks out a handful of philosophers based on the theme of each issue ("World Domination Handbook", "We Hate the French", etc), so it isn't pretending to be a complete or even chronological look at all of philosophy. It includes a few non-Western-canon folks such as Bodhidharma and Isaac Luria. The stereotypes of various groups and nationalities get a little heavy, which could offend some readers, but they're pretty even-handed in their lampooning. One of the Amazon.com reviews describes it as "Monty Python-esque", which is pretty accurate. I kind of want a print of the Sefirot Rube-Goldberg-machine thing now. Also the Hero's Journey board game (the Joseph Campbell chapter was particularly good).

Illustrations: Pen-and-ink flat cartoon drawings, with a couple of scattered photographs.

Rating: 5Q/5P

Curricular connections: 10-12th grade philosophy class or free reading. There's some profanity, violence, and sexual scenes/innuendo, making it more appropriate for high school, but excerpts could be used in lower grades.
