Bone: Out From Boneville, by Jeff Smith, color by Steve Hamaker. Graphix, New York, 2005.

Summary: The three Bone cousins encounter many adventures after they are kicked out of Boneville, including dragons, rat monsters, and a cow race.

Analysis: This is excellent and fun. The characters are likable, including some nicely strong female characters, and the monsters are a good mix of scary and entertaining (one of them keeps complaining that the other will not let it make its prey into quiche). The illustrations are cartoonish but detailed and are well-integrated with text blocks.

Illustrations: Pen-and-ink drawings with digital(?) color added later.

Rating: 5Q/5P

Curricular Connections: Bone is fun, yet has fairly complex language, making it a nice choice for reluctant readers.
