Curricular Connections: This is an excellent book for a History class. It would work especially well in an Eighth grade History class as American History is taught at this level. Students could research the duel to discover more information about Burr and Hamilton. They could also research their political policies as well as the art of dueling. Fradin has supplied excellent source notes at the end of the book on dueling and on both men. He has also given a list of books for further reading, so students could do more detailed research. This book would lend itself to a unit on biographies and famous American figures.

Duel! Burr and Hamilton's Deadly War of Words, by Dennis Brindell Fradin and Larry Day (ill). Walker Books for Young Readers, 2008.
Summary: The story of the rivalry between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton, culminating in a pistol duel.
Analysis: Very nicely done. The text is appropriate for elementary students but not at all "dumbed down", and so would make a great supplement to a middle-school history class or even for high schoolers who maybe are English-language learners or reluctant readers. I hadn't known that Burr and Jefferson actually tied for the presidency! That and other facts are neatly woven into the story, making them more personalized than if they were encountered in a more general history text. At the end there's a touch of the "now boys and girls, we know we don't use violence to solve problems", which I think could have been left up to the actual tragedy of the story, but it's not overbearing.
Illustrations: Painterly watercolors outlined in black ink. Most illustrations are full-page, creating an immersive experience.
Rating: 5Q/5P
Curricular Connections: 6-8th grade American History class.
