Citation:  Earthquake by Milly Lee and Yangsook Choi, ill. New York:  Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2001.

ISBN: 0-329-44980-X

Annotation: A Chinese family survive the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 by escaping from Chinatown with all their belongings to Golden Gate Park. The story is the fictional account told by the author’s mother.

Media: Watercolor paintings

Personal Rating: 4Q/4P

Curricular Connections:  This would be a good addition to the 6th grade Science Curriculum because earthquakes are studied.  The book talks about the effects of the 1906 earthquake on Lee’s mother.  It would also fit well into a History class because this is Lee’s mother’s first person account of this historical event.  Students could research the 1906 earthquake and they could also look up more first person accounts about the earthquake.

Grade Level or Age Range: Grades 5 and 6
