Annotation

Emily’s all about rock. Rock and Roll High School. Hitting rock bottom. Making rock soup. Talking to rock icons. It’s the rock issue!

Alliteration

The use of sporadic alliteration allows the text to have a smooth, lyrical quality. The alliteration in the names of the other bands in the Rock & Roll High School sketch highlight the cheesiness of the names (Blistering Bumrash, Wendy and the Weirdos), especially when compared to Emily’s non-alliterative band name, Emily and the Thirteen Necks of Doom.

Artwork

By changing art styles with each feature and using a variety of media, this book has the style and feel of a slick zine, such as Emily herself would create (ahem, which is the point). In a number of the features, the sloppy, sketchy nature of the artwork and the primary hues being bright red, gray and lots of black highlight the edginess of Emily’s persona, all rocker and goth.
