An example of Shoujo Manga, Emma is the story of a young maid who meets the attraction of a young gentleman named William. Because they exist in 1885 England, their situation is hindered by strict social stratification. Supporting character Prince Hakim adds humor and is a foil to William. Mori’s black and white illustrations provide expressive characterizations and faithfully capture the upper and lower class settings of Victorian England.

Art: Manga style black and white drawings.

Genre and Themes: Fiction, Magna, Historical, World Cultures, Romance

Age Range: Grades 7-9

What the book is about: A romantic, soap opera style depiction of a maid’s life in Victorian England. Emma has modern feminist sensibilities and must decide whether to give up her independence for love.

Notes: This is a good story for reluctant readers. Some stereotypes about Middle Eastern cultures are depicted.
