Personal Rating: 4Q/4P
Curricular Connections: This would be a good choice to teach point-of-view in a History class. Columbus’ coming to America is told from the perspective of a Taino child who sees his culture, people, and language destroyed. This book offers the perspective not given in traditional History texts. Yolen has supplied an “Author’s Note” that gives details about Columbus’ landing on San Salvador. Students can research Columbus and write reports based the Taino’s perspective. The illustrations are fantastic and honor the Taino people.
