This photo essay based on the UN's Declaration of Human Rights, pairs children's poems and moving photographs with each of the thirty basic human rights.

Illustrations:  Photographs

Themes:  Human Rights

Curricular Connections:  9-12 grade students can be asked to create a personal photo essay expressing their own interpretation of these rights, poetry and essays can be included.  History students can choose of the human rights and discuss it using a historical event.  For example, the right to free elections can lead to discussions about Women's Rights to Vote, and the more current events in both Iraq and Iran.

Lesson Plan:

Audience:  Middle school/High school students

Topic:  Social Science/Human Rights

Lesson will begin with an introduction to how this Universal Declaration of Human Rights was created.  Students will each be given a copy of the 30 rights, with not visuals attached.  They will be instructed to think about each of these rights and over the next week collect images (newspaper, magazine, computer images, photographs or drawings) that they feel best represent the rights.  At the end of the week, teacher will place posters, one for each human right, around the room and students will be asked to attach their images to the posters.  When completed, all students will silently "tour" the images.  When completed, teacher will lead a discussion, allowing students to comment on their impressions and feelings.  To extend, the lesson, students could be asked to create their own PowerPoint presentation or write about human rights.  History classes can focus on how these rights have changed over time or with different countries and cultures.
