Significant aspects of book's artwork: Illustrator Doug Chayka uses a warm, muted desert color pallet for his acrylic paintings. The scenes are not rendered in high detail, simulating the feeling of the desert and the imprecise distances that come from heat distortion. Chayka paints the people in the refugee camp in rich, warm colors and always in groups, imparting a sense of vibrant community to the story. He also incorporates the hard life of the camp seamlessly into the background of the story.
Curricular connections: History/Social Studies, World Culture.
School level: Middle school or junior high.
