Citation: Handel: Who Knew What He Liked by M.T. Anderson and Kevin Hawkes, ill. Cambridge, Mass.: Candlewick Press, 2001.
One of my Top 10 selections
ISBN: 978-0-7636-2562-7
Annotation: Anderson’s biography is a fun way to get to know Handel. He organizes the information around the idea that Handel always knew what he liked and wasn’t afraid to show it. This approach makes it a lively read.
Media: Illustrations done in acrylics
Personal Rating: 5Q/5P
Curricular Connections: This would make a great read aloud for the study of Handel and classical music in a music class. Children could listen to Handel’s music as well. Anderson imbues a sense of charm and energy into Handel. He provides a chronology of Handel’s life, a discography, and a further reading section. Hawkes’ illustrations add drama and emotion to the text. The text is also inset into the pictures or bordered by old fashioned frames. The artwork is a wonderful feature of the book. Anderson also puts footnotes at the bottom of pages where information is needed such as clarification with vocabulary or historical events. This is a must read for music lovers.
