King, Dr. M. L. (1963, 1997). I Have a Dream. New York: Scholastic Inc. 0590205151. 5Q/5P. Original paintings by 15 different artists.
King’s famous speech is told word for word beside various gorgeous illustrations, also includes a forward by Coretta Scott King.
Repetition: Dr. King uses repetition in his speech to help bring power to his words. The two main phrases he repeats throughout the speech are, “Let freedom ring” and “I have a dream”. The use of this literary device in his speech not only makes it stronger but allows for those to be two of the most famous and recognizable phrases of not only the Civil Rights Movement but America’s History.
Metaphor: In his speech, Dr, King also uses metaphors to get across his message. Examples of the metaphors he uses are; “America has give the negro people a bad check”, “Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality”, and “a beautiful symphony of brotherhood”. These metaphors not only strengthen Dr. King’s speech but also add a poetic feel to his words.
