Jazz on a Saturday Night by Leo and Diane Dillon.  New York:  Blue Sky Press, 2007.

ISBN: 0590478931

Media:  Acrylic Paint

Q4/P4

Told in rhyme, the narrative imagines a Saturday night featuring Jazz legends such as Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and Ella Fitzgerald.  Other resources on Jazz and its musicians, and CD included.

ARTWORK:  Using a mix of acrylic paints and pencil, the illustrations and reducing the images to light and dark give a simplified quality to them.  By doing this, the illustrations become geometric.  Pencil is added on top of the paintings to add pattern to the fabric shapes.  A dark color palette also adds to the mood of this piece.  The effect is like going to a real concert where the lighting comes from behind and simply outlines the silhouettes of the performers.
