Love, D. A. (2006). Of numbers and stars: the story of Hypatia. Illustrated by Pam Paparone. New York: Holiday House.  0823416216

The mathematician, Theon, believed in an education for his daughter, Hypatia – although few girls were given an education in 4th century Alexandria. Hypatia excelled in scholarly pursuits like philosophy, astronomy, and mathematics.  She became an inspirational teacher for many students, until her untimely, tragic end. Paparone’s richly colored acrylic paintings recall the simple stylized designs of the ancient artists, utilizing pattern, flora, and fauna in motifs that border Hypatia’s intellectual growth.

Rating: 4Q/3P

A heroine of women’s history, Hypatia was a 4th century scholar and teacher of mathematics, astronomy and philosophy, who was brutally murdered in the prime of her life. Students studying similar disciplines may want to research further and find her contributions that were buried in history.  Students of ancient civilization studies will find many cultural, social, and political elements supported by what is gleaned in their textbooks.
