A book about 22 people who have been poetically defined by their vocation or character in tombstone engravings and obituaries. The book is a blend of figurative language and illustrations that allude to metaphors and allusions.  

 
Literary Devices: The author and illustrator employ metaphor, allusion and rhyme.  
 
Curriculum Connection:  This book is appropriate for students in sixth grade.  According to the Reading/Language Arts Framework for California Public Schools students at this grade level should have the ability to "determine how tone or meaning is conveyed in poetry through word choice, figurative language, sentence structure, line length, punctuation, rhythm, repetition and rhyme" (p. 156).  In seventh grade students shoul dbe able to identify metaphors, similes and prose.  English
