Pandora, by Robert Burleigh and Raul Colon, ill. San Diego: Silver Whistle, 2002.
ISBN: 978-0152021788
Annotation: A richly illustrated retelling, with a more admirable Pandora than usual; she’s more courageous and spirited than simply meddlesome, and is still brave even after her terrible mistake.
Use of Symbolism: Pandora’s encounter with the fierce and powerful mountain lioness encourages her to have faith in her own bravery and daring. Though this also leads her to unleashing all the demons locked in the jar (replacing the box in this version), the mountain lioness symbolizes her resilience—also embodied in the form of Hope, left in the bottom of the jar after all the demons are released.
Illustrations: watercolor and colored pencil
