During a brief window of time in the late nineteenth century, African American jockey Isaac Murphy raced as a free man before discrimination forced black jockeys from the sport.  His successes include the highest percentage of wins for any jockey, 3 Kentucky Derby victories, and an early induction into the Jockey Hall of Fame.  The price was great, though, as his crash dieting to make weight weakened his health and eventually left him vulnerable to the pneumonia that killed him in 1896 at the young age of 35.  This biography serves as an inspiration for hard work and a caution for eating disorders.
