Ruby’s wish is to be like her brothers and go to the university.  But in China, a woman was raised only to get married.  This books deals with Ruby’s frustrations and goals and her feelings of discriminations and her honesty with her grandfather.  

There is Chinese calligraphy in the book and the illustrations “were tendered in gouache on Arches hot press paper.” The colors in the book are various shades of red.  The cover is a bright red with Ruby peeking through under a Chinese design.
