5Q/4Q
Curriculum Connection: Grades 5-8; US History, African American History, Cultural Studies
Literary Application: Repetition
Show Way depicts the lineage of the author’s maternal family; each time a child is born Woodson incites the phrase, “Loved that (child’s name) up so. Yes, she loved that (child’s name) up,” totaling a six time repetition. This adds a lyrical quality and also furthers the fact that throughout the book the “Show Way” message is repeated generation after generation.
Annotation: Beginning nine generations back, the author relays her family history (slavery and the civil rights movement included) to her daughter by telling about the “Show Way” quilt.
