Ali loves learning and writing calligraphy, watching it flow across the page in forms reminiscent of dancing and soccer moves. Living amongst the bombings in Baghdad, he feels a connection to Yakut, a 13th century calligrapher who escaped to a tower to avoid the horrors of war. Ali finds shelter in his calligraphy – where drafting “SALĀM,” for peace, is still very difficult to achieve.

The illustrations, done in pencil and charcoal, are digitally enhanced with a collage of colorful patterns that make up clothing, backgrounds, and other items on the page.
