Symbol-Seattle was a rapidly growing city in the 1970s and Jacob loved watching the construction.  The people building together reminded him of being a boy in Harlem. Looking at a hammer Jacob was reminded of what a timeless artifact it is.  Jacob began collecting tools and using their image as symbols for his Builder paintings. The Builder painting symbolizes the beauty and harmony of people working together, but also the struggles that exist in life.
