A lonely, homeless soldier strikes a bargain with the devil that he will wear a bearskin supplied with an infinite amount of gold, not bathe, and not pray to God for seven years. The devil believes it will be an easy win for his soul, but he underestimates the clever determination of the soldier.

This book contributes to the study of folktales while giving students the opportunity to analyze the character and narrative elements of the story, such as how the soldier was able to keep his determination and cleverly resolve the restrictions that the devil presented to him. For example, he is told not to pray to God, but he asks all whom he encounters to pray for him, thus finding a loophole that helps in his personal salvation.

In this retelling of a Grimms’ tale, the devil makes a bargain with a returning soldier giving his bottomless pockets of gold if only he’ll wear a rotting bearskin for seven years, never praying or grooming.  The dark, somber tone of the story gives way to optimism and faith as the soldier reflects on his worth and his ability to have a positive impact on others.  The rich and fulfilling ending should make an excellent discussion starter for a mature audience.
