Curricular Connection – This story could be used in a junior or senior high school setting to discuss oral history and its truth. Since the author does not give any references or sources for the story, it is assumed that she made it up to reflect how oral histories could be used from one generation to the next. It would be interesting for students to do some research into the idea that some African villages may have moved to stop their inhabitants from being captured for slaves. More interesting, however, is the artwork by Nelson. He penciled the drawings and then photocopied them and applied paint to them. This technique would be easy to replicate in the classroom.
