The enemy by Davide Cali and Serge Bloch. New York: Schwartz & Wade, 2009.
ISBN: 978-0-37584-500-0
Annotation: Two men are enemies. No one knows how long their war has been going on, or how many are left. But they continue to fight, even though neither is sure why.
Age range: 5-6 grades
Media used by illustrator: line drawings, photos
Personal Rating: 4Q/4P
Curricular connections: excellent in an upper elementary history class
Notes on Artwork: The book is done in simple pencil drawings, with little background scenery. The enemies in the book look virtually identical, to show how similar they are. The book is primarily white, an unusual color choice for a book about war. However, this color serves to illustrate how barren this world of constant warfare is, and how devoid of color.
