The Great Serum Race by Debbie S. Miller. New York: Walker & Company, 2002. ISBN 0-8027-8811-4
The book depicts the onerous winter journey made by 20 dog teams and their mushers to save a small Alaskan village from an outbreak of diphtheria in 1925. Their route became the Iditarod Trail. The theme of the book is one of determination and drive in the face of a difficult, if not impossible, trial. Most people would have given up, but the mushers and dogs were determined to save the village and they forged on despite extreme conditions.
