This is the Dream by Diane Z. Shore, Jessica Alexander and James Ransome, ill. NY: Amistad/HarperCollins
Publishers, 2006. ISBN 978-0-06-055519-1
Using rhyming text and large, powerful illustrations, this book contrasts the way things were before, during and after the days of segregation. Side by side comparisons of schools, libraries and restaurants show the differences between the black and the white world before and after segregation.
Illustrations: Oil and photo collage
Themes: Segregation, Civil Rights Movement
Curricular Connection: Contrasting images provide basis for discussion over social injustices.
Significant Art Contribution: The combination of strong paintings with historical photos makes for a memorable art style. The back, inside cover has a collage of the American flag with cutout children, using a mixture of facial parts in many ethnicities blended to portray that while we are all different, we all have similar needs, desires and basic human rights. The words "Freedom and Justice for All" pasted throughout the white stripes of the flag, emphasize this point.
