Curricular Connection – The presentation of the book is cleverly done. Harriet’s life is written on yellow background and Sojourner’s life is explained on a peach background. When they meet, the color is blue. All the text is on one side of the page in exactly the same dimensions. The illustrations are interpretive of a young artist trying to find his or her skill and style.
This book is valuable for a classroom setting when studying American history and especially women who influenced history. There is enough background information on both women to help students understand their reasons for speaking out and helping to end the tradition of slavery. It would have been helpful for the author to cite her sources so further research could be attempted, if needed.
